Broward Immigrant Youth Policy Summit and Parents in Action

On Friday, December 8, 2017, from 10 a.m. to noon at Nova Southeastern University took place an event in which 297 recently arrived Broward County Public School immigrant students presented their legislative policy proposals and recommendations to improve their communities at the Close Up – Broward Youth Policy Summit Expo.

Close Up Foundation, Washington, DC and BCPS Bilingual/ESOL Department are sponsors of the event.

This year it was expanded to include a Parents in Action session on Saturday, December 9, 2017 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Signature Grand.

During the event the students were able to explain their proposal to several persons that attended the events.

It was impressive how many topics and ideas were cover in different fields.

In education, they are making proposal such as:

  • To have more and better guidance for new students in the US, about our educational system.
  • To reduce the quantity of exams.
  • To control consumption of drug in school.
  • To solve discrimination issues.
  • To improve financial aid for foreigners.

Mr. Runcie, members of the educational system of Broward were present during the event, also members of CLOSE UP and Broward ESOL Department.

Special guest were member of the ESOL Department of Miami Dade.
