A Youth Violence Prevention Program by Sandy Hook Promise

During the week of September 24–28, hundreds of schools and youth organizations from across the United States will participate in Sandy Hook Promise’s third annual Start With Hello Week. Start With Hello Week brings attention to the growing epidemic of social isolation in our schools and communities and empowers young people to create a culture of inclusion and connectedness within their school or youth organization. Start With Hello Week raises awareness and educates students and the community through Start With Hello trainings, advertising, activities, public proclamations, media events, student contests, and school awards.

APD Medicaid Waiver 101 Training

Learn about Medicaid Waiver with Rita Castor, APD Regional Operations Manager. A comprehensive overview of eligibility and services will be provided to case managers, and another community agencies wanting to learn more.

This is a FREE training is limited to 30 participants; registration is first come first serve.

Embodied Presence and Self Care (Level 1) NEW

We are pleased to offer a second round of Mindfulness Professional Development by AHAM Education as part of the Superintendent’s Mindfulness Initiative. To apply see attached flyer for details or access “Steps to Register” below.

The purpose of this training is to equip district personnel with self-care and mindfulness tools, promote habitual mindfulness practice among students, and create a foundation for a mindful school community culture. CEUs for mental health professionals are available upon request.

There are two levels of training:

Level 1 Mindfulness Practitioner Certificate (MBSR Course) – currently available for enrollment, see attached flyer

Level 2 Mindful Facilitator Certificate (additional supervised facilitator training) – to be announced

Guardian Ad Litem – Volunteer Information Sessions

The Guardian ad Litem Program of Broward County is appointed to children in the county that are alleged to have been abused, abandon or neglected. If you are passionate about children and want to make a difference in a child’s life by breaking the circle of abuse, you can help by becoming a Guardian ad Litem Volunteer. Be the Voice that affects their length of time in foster care and their ability to receive services.

(SCDABC), wanted to make sure that we are bringing awareness about Sickle Cell Anemia and Sickle Cell Trait. 2nd Annual Attendance Symposium

The Student Services Department with BCPS is working diligently to plan for a successful Attendance Symposium for the 2018/19 school year. This year’s event will take place at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in the Au-Rene Theater. We are expecting at least 1,000 community members (including parents, principals, school counselors, school social workers, elected officials, District leaders, and business partners).

Community Resource Fair

The Haitian Families Support Committee, a subsidiary of the Broward Children’s Strategic Plan in partnership with Broward County Public Schools Student Services Department and Revelation Christian Church, host the 3rd Annual Community Resource Fair. We are looking to make this event bigger and better every year. This year, we have changed the location to Lauderdale Lakes Middle School (previously held at Franklin Park) to expand the reach within the County, giving more access to various resources. There will be entertainment, games, various health screenings and a food distribution sponsored by Feeding South Florida for the whole family. This event is open to all residents of Broward County!

Disability Programs & Trainings and Give Opportunity to Disability invite you to become a vendor or an official sponsor of the 5th Annual FUNclusion® at the GERMAN AMERICAN CLUB in Hollywood, Florida.

FUNclusion is an annual entertainment event for the whole family. We provide a multisensory platform for creative, cultural and educational activities and presentations highlighting the work of individuals whose creative gifts go unnoticed due to social stigmas that marginalized people with disabilities.

Dads Take Your Child to School Day

Broward County Public Schools will be celebrating Dads Take Your Child to School Day, which is a statewide initiative of the Florida Department of Education to encourage fathers and male role models to become involved in the education of their children as a means for increasing student achievement. Elementary schools within Broward County Public Schools will participate in this campaign. Fathers, stepfathers, grandfathers, uncles, brothers, foster fathers and other male role models are invited to take their children to school on September 26.

Open House and Provider Resource Fair for Students with Disabilities NEW

The Children’s Services Council, along with support from Vocational Rehabilitation (VR), Broward Schools, the Autism Society and others have worked together to bring a night of information to parents and youth ages 14-21 about great services offered by VR.

Please join us for BHS’ Inaugural Broward Housing Solutions® A Walk in the Park – “Your Contribution for a Solution: Mental Illness & Homeless”.

Whether you skip or walk – your support will help us fund our affordable housing programs which provide quality, permanent and affordable housing opportunities to meet the needs of lower income or homeless people with disabilities who also have mental illness.

Bring the whole family even your dog* – there will be activities, raffle prizes, music and lots of goodies to eat!

All proceeds will be directed to helping the homeless with mental illness.

Vocational Rehabilitation: Pre-Employment Transition Services

Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) Pre-Employment Training Services (formerly known as STAR) is proving several services to students between the ages of 14-21, currently enrolled in school, and have an IEP or 504 plan. Please see flier for more detail information.

Angel Tree Program – The Salvation Army of Broward

Christmas has officially begun here at The Salvation Army of Broward! Starting 8/27/18 to 10/5/18 the Salvation Army will be taking registrations to get an Christmas appointment card for our Angel Tree Program. Please see flier for more information.

Reading Scholarship Accounts are available for public school students in grades 3 to 5 who struggle with reading. If your student scored a Level 1 or 2 on their English Language Arts state test, they are eligible to receive a $500 scholarship that can be used for tutoring, after-school programs, instructional materials, and curriculum, all to improve their reading or literacy skills. English Language Learners will receive priority. Step Up is the organization administering the program.
